Scott Redford A Comparison of Middle Byzantine and Seljuk Palace and Garden CultureOn one hand, excavation and survey over the last several decades have uncovered remains of many sultanic and emirial residence complexes and gardens from late 12th and 13th century Seljuk Anatolia. Byzantine palace and garden culture, on the other hand, are largely known from texts. Some of these texts, however, describe Byzantine palatial buildings and hunting gardens with distinct similarities to Seljuk ones. This paper aims to compare and contrast these contemporaneous elite cultures. < Back to Abstracts of Papers
